The DRI annually provides a $10 million award to one community in each of the State’s ten Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) regions. Applicants must demonstrate their readiness and capacity to identify and implement a slate of synergistic projects that collectively achieve a community-based vision for the downtown. The REDCs review applications and nominate winners to the DOS for final review and approval.

Welcome to the Village of Hempstead
Downtown Hempstead is an ideal setting for investment from the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). Downtown Hempstead is a 0.12 square mile central business and cultural district in the north central area of the Town of Hempstead. The Hempstead LIRR Station and Rosa Parks Hempstead Transit Center provide convenient transportation options, offering direct connections to JFK, Penn Station, New York City and Long Island for commuters. Hempstead’s downtown features a number of civic and cultural landmarks, as well as retail, housing, and schools, making it a mixed-use civic, cultural, and commercial focal point. Nearby, educational institutions play a vital role in supporting educational and workforce development.
In Hempstead, recently completed planning studies and project financing initiatives are supportive of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and revitalization of brownfield sites. Infill mixed-use development and associated downtown improvements will enhance walkability within the downtown and promote connectivity with surrounding residential and commercial areas, as well as other community assets.
